Giant Springs State Park

Giant Springs is one of the largest freshwater springs in the United States, and it was first recorded in the journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805. Located in Great Falls, Montana, Giant Springs State Park is the most visited state park in the state, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and recreational opportunities.

Fed by the Little Belt Mountains, the spring flows at an incredible rate of 156 million gallons per day. The water begins its journey in the Little Belt Mountains and takes approximately 26 years to reach the springs. The water emerges crystal clear, and amazingly, it remains a constant 54 degrees year-round. In winter, mist from the warm water coats the trees, creating a breathtaking display of sparkling ice.

Spanning over 4,500 acres, the park offers more than 30 miles of paved and dirt trails, making it a haven for hiking and biking enthusiasts. Wildlife watchers and photographers will enjoy the scenic vistas along the River's Edge Trail, which is open 365 days a year. One of the park’s most spectacular features is the Great Falls of the Missouri, one of four waterfalls within the park. Additionally, the park features five hydroelectric dams owned by Northwestern Energy. All of the waterfalls and most of the dams are viewable by road and overlooks throughout the Park. The overlooks contain informational kiosks, vault toilets, and access to the trails.

Families will enjoy shaded picnic areas, interpretive exhibits, and a visit to the on-site Giant Springs Trout Hatchery. Giant Springs State Park is the only State Park with a fish hatchery within its bounds. The Hatchery uses water from the springs to fill their raceways. Stop in and learn about the hatchery-raised fish and view the monster trout in the show pond, and you can even feed them.
