About Havre Residential Historic District
Welcome to Havre and Hill County from the Havre/Hill County Preservation Commission. Havre has a beautiful 36 block residential historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Many examples of late 19th and early 20th century architecture grace the district. There is something wonderful for every architectural taste!
Havre was once home to well-known figures, such as H. Earl Clack, a powerful entrepreneur owning businesses ranging from a hardware store to grain elevators, his own brand of oil, gas stations and real estate. Two homes made by him and his gracious wife, Margaret Turner Clack, are an important part of our historic district; one home enjoys an individual listing on the National Register. Frank and Jane Buttrey also made their home in Havre. Many people remember the Buttrey Department Store, later Buttrey Foods. The Buttrey home graces our historic district as well along with many others.
The Havre Hill County Historic Preservation Office has made available a walking tour map. Maps of the historic district are available at Havre Beneath the Streets/Railroad Museum, Clack Museum at the Holiday Village Mall, the Havre/Hill County Library, the Vande Bogart Library on MSU-Northern's campus and the Havre Chamber of Commerce.
There are two self-guided historic walking tours, the Havre Residential Historic District Tour and the Havre Downtown Business and Railroad Walking Tour.
