Ivan Doig Day

The Dupuyer Community is hosting a birthday party celebrating Ivan Doig and This House of Sky on Monday, June 27 from 2-4 p.m. at the Dupuyer Community Hall. Ivan Doig's commemorative birthday party will feature music, stories, exhibits, special guests and birthday cake.

Montana born writer, Ivan Doig (1939-2015), told the stories of the people who settled and lived in the Dupuyer area of the Rocky Mountain Front from 1889 until the present. His books honored the people and the place in both nonfiction memoir and fictional novels.

In This House of Sky - a finalist for the National Book Award - Doig chronicled his life and times from his sixth birthday until adulthood. His places included the ranch nearby, the Dupuyer community and his high school years at Valier High School. In later writing, he described Dupuyer as "the hospitable armful of town of my high school years." The memoir was Doig's first book. Sixteen books followed, many set in fictional Gros Ventre. Gros Ventre was based on the location of Dupuyer and the surrounding area.
