Food – Wonderful Food

Now, I’ve been known to rave about food and that’s just what I plan to do here! Several friends and I recently dined at the Union Grille located in the Grand Union Hotel in Fort Benton, MT. Oh my, what a treat.
It was a chilly evening and we were a bit late for our dinner reservations, and we were hungry and tired. The wonderful ambience of the dining room soon began to mellow our attitudes and in no time we were sampling some heavenly mussels. We may not have Iron Chef training but we started analyzing the mussels, trying to figure out what the unique taste was. Ian guessed it spot on. It was coconut milk that added just a slightly sweet taste, yum.
Another appetizer ordered was wontons stuffed with mushrooms. Before we started tasting we decided we needed to take photos of the great presentation. Yes, it was tough to hold ourselves back from the wontons!
I ordered a beet salad because someone had told me I just had to try it. There is a new chef at the Union Grille and this is one of his additions to the menu. Oh my goodness, I can still taste the warm goat cheese rolled in walnuts. I kept thinking, gosh, this is a dish I could prepare…so simple and so wonderful.
Fresh warm bread, a good sampling of appetizers, a unique salad – what more could I want? How about the main course! Everyone in our group tried something different so we were able to taste quite a variety of the menu items.
Menu items change seasonally and local products are featured when possible. Kamut, an Egyptian grain grown locally, comes with one of the seafood entrees and I’ve also had Montana beef at the restaurant.
I suspect you are wondering if we had room for dessert. Well, there’s always room for dessert and again we ended up ordering a nice variety. What a great evening at the Grand Union.
