Follow the Montana Heritage Trail

Montana Heritage Trail: From Winifred to Lewistown

Wander through a landscape shaped by time as you venture through Montana’s storied center. Follow the Missouri River Breaks, uncover the quiet remnants of a tucked-away ghost town, and stumble upon creativity where you least expect it. Here, past and present live side by side. Dusty mornings give way to possibility as the journey between Winifred and Lewistown reveals a heritage waiting to be discovered.

Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument | Towering white cliffs, winding river valleys, wide-open plains. The Upper Missouri River Breaks is the perfect introduction to the wild, storied heart of Central Montana. Start early as morning light reveals the beauty of the landscape or gear up for an afternoon adventure! While most of the terrain is accessible only by water or trail, a scenic drive north of Lewistown will lead you to dramatic views that could only be carved by time.

Pro Tip: Late spring through early fall is the best time to explore the Breaks. Head toward the Slippery Ann Wildlife Viewing Area in September for a chance to see hundreds of elk gathering in the area.

Stafford-McCelland Ferry

Stafford-McClelland Ferry | Step back in time and venture deeper into the Missouri River Breaks on the Stafford-McClelland Ferry (one of three river ferries). Once a luxury and now a charming reminder of another era, riding the ferry across the Missouri River is one of those unique experiences you’ll never forget. Drive the gravel road, open the weathered mailbox, call the operator waiting on the other side. Each step invites you deeper into the experience, unveiling the ultimate destination.

Winifred Museum | Hidden in the small town of Winifred is a display of more than three thousand Tonka trunks—if you know where to look. A treasure on its own, the Winifred Museum invites you to uncover quirky artifacts, local history, and even a new dinosaur species (known as Judith). Vintage tools. Homestead furniture. Antique guns. Tonka toys. Here, the adventure is in the discovery.

Kendall Ghost Town

Kendall Ghost Town | You may not encounter ghosts, but you will leave with a story. Follow the road less traveled (continuing on US Hwy 191) and you’ll find yourself at Kendall Ghost Town. Once home to hundreds of gold miners, the area now stands quiet. Feel the echoes of the past as you wander through crumbling structures, stone ruins, and the remnants of a forgotten community shaped by the promise of gold.

Pottery being glazed at MOB Studios & Caffè

MOB Studios & Caffè | Let Montana’s inspiring landscapes fuel your creativity (and a night out) at Lewistown’s MOB Studios & Caffè. Stroll through local art galleries while sipping a glass of wine. Order gelato for two, savoring the small moments together. Or try your hand at pottery in the clay studio. MOB Studios is a welcoming spot to unwind and let the day’s adventures linger just a little bit longer.

Pro Tip: Pottery is just the beginning. Check out the Studio’s full schedule for more classes and workshops.

The Mint Bar & Grill

The Mint Bar & Grill | End your trip in true Central Montana style with a good drink, a great meal, and a toast to an epic journey! Refined and full of local downtown flavor, The Mint Bar & Grill is the kind of spot where rustic dishes and craft cocktails are served with a side of friendly conversation. So, go ahead—grab a chair, reminisce, and celebrate the stories found and the many more still to come!
