About Haymaker Wildlife Management Area
Haymaker Wildlife Management Area encompasses 1,321 acres.
Management goal: The Haymaker Wildlife Management Area (HWMA) was purchased in 1957 to provide winter range for elk, allow for expansion of the base herd and alleviate depredation on privately owned lands.
Hunting opportunities: Archery and rifle hunting seasons for elk, mule deer, antelope, and black bear, and upland bird hunting are open to licensed hunters during open seasons. Antlerless elk permits are available through the statewide drawing.
Wildlife viewing: Visitors can see elk, mule deer, antelope, and upland birds from roadsides. Black bears are occasionally observed. Non-game and bird-watching opportunities occur year round. This Wildlife Management Area is home to a variety of songbirds, and raptors. The last 4 miles into the game range is a two-track road which is very rough (4 wheel-drive recommended).
