About Castle Museum
Rising from the heart of White Sulphur Springs, Montana, the Castle Museum is a granite-built time capsule that tells the story of ambition, elegance, and frontier grit. Constructed in 1892 from hand-cut stone hauled by oxen from the nearby Castle Mountains, this 12-room Victorian mansion was once the home of entrepreneur Byron Roger Sherman.
Today, it’s the proud home of the Meagher County Museum, where Montana’s Gilded Age and pioneer spirit come to life.
Inside, you’ll find ornate furnishings, Belgian and Oriental rugs, Italian marble washbasins, and crystal chandeliers that reflect the era's opulence. Each room is carefully curated, showcasing artifacts, photographs, and vintage clothing that reflect Meagher County’s roots in ranching, mining, railroads, and early settlement.
Just behind the castle, the original carriage house invites hands-on discovery. Climb aboard a Canyon Ferry stagecoach, check out horse-drawn fire engines, and peek into re-created spaces like a one-room schoolhouse and an old-time bank. These interactive exhibits make history fun and engaging for visitors of all ages. The museum is operated by the Meagher County Historical Association, whose dedication brings these stories to life with care and authenticity.
Open seasonally from May 15 to September 15, the Castle Museum is a can’t-miss stop along the Kings Hill Scenic Byway. After your visit, stroll through downtown White Sulphur Springs, soak at the Spa Hot Springs Motel, or head into the nearby Little Belt Mountains for fresh air and adventure.
From recreation and history to local culture, great food, and small-town hospitality, Meagher County offers something for everyone, so don’t miss out!
Whether you're drawn by the architecture, the history, or the small-town charm, the Castle Museum brings Montana’s past to life in a way everyone can enjoy. Come see why this stone fortress has watched over White Sulphur Springs for more than 130 years!
