Living History Day- Fort Assinniboine

Saturday, 06/03/2023

Fort Assinniboine, one of the largest forts built, was constructed in 1879 after the US Army defeated and captured the Nez Perce band of Chief Joseph in the Battle of the Bear Paw. At its maximum extent in 1880 it garrisoned more than 750 officers, enlisted men and their families, with 104 buildings.

Today Fort Assiniboine is one of the forts existing that has the most original buildings still standing. Living History Day is the only time where you can see the fort come to life. Tour the grounds on the back of the Black Jack Wagon, tour the inside of the Guard House, Officers Amusement Hall, an Officers Apartment and of course the old library which is now where the Interpretive Center resides.

For this event located in the Hops Room we will be serving a free lunch. Also, to keep things hopping, music by the Other Brothas and Sistas will be playing.

A special appearance by the Havre Black Powder Club will be there with a variety of period weapons including their cannon which will be periodically fired by chosen lucky children through out the day. Come, be part of history at Fort Assiniboine.
