If Central Montana is the Heart of the Big Sky, then Lewistown would be one of its main heartbeats. Geographically considered to be the center of the entire state, Lewistown is a place of grit and charm and beauty all its own.

If you are coming into town via Highway 87 from Great Falls, you will catch the full scope of Lewistown’s hidden nature. Dropping down Mainstreet hill, you get a full purview of the major downtown with the Judith Mountains as an eye pleasing backdrop.

Coming from the east, well, you get to go over the great divide and see where the plains meet the mountains.

1. Walking and Biking Trails

The Lewistown trail system has 24 miles of paved and graveled trails that meander along Big Spring creek and link the downtown, schools, and parks.  It’s a great way to explore Lewistown by foot or bike and get some exercise while on your travels. Given that Lewistown is surrounded by 3 mountain ranges, the views won’t disappoint while you explore the trails.

2. Limekiln Hike

If you’re looking for a fun day hike, then Limekiln Loop Trail is a great option. Just outside of Lewistown, Limekiln Loop Trail is 7 miles long and gains about 1,000 feet in elevation. 3. Crystal Lake

One of Lewistown’s true gems, Crystal Lake offers several activities for any outdoor enthusiast. If you’re looking to relax on the water, catch some trout, hike to the ice caves, or just enjoy some time with family and friends around a campsite, Crystal Lake will leave you with many memories.

4. Float Big Spring Creek

It might be the winter months right now, but if you get the chance to visit Lewistown in the summer, be sure to take a float on the iconic Big Spring Creek. It’s the perfect way to cool down on a hot day!

5. Ackley Lake
