If you are a wintertime outdoor enthusiast, then Central Montana should be next on your list for a cold weather getaway. Whatever gets you excited about gearing up to stay warm, the following is a list of winter activities you can find in Central Montana.
Known for ski areas with a local vibe and small crowds, be sure to visit one of the three ski areas, Showdown, Bear Paw Ski Bowl, or Teton Pass Ski Resort in Central Montana. It’s the perfect way to get off the beaten path and make new memories with friends and family this winter.
Central Montana is a region of diverse landscapes that offer unique cross-country skiing opportunities. With multiple locations to enjoy miles of cross-country skiing trails, Central Montana pairs beauty with adventure. After a refreshing winter workout, visit a local small-town community where you can rest and recharge in a rural atmosphere.
If skis or snowboards aren’t your thing, but you love being out in nature while snow is on the ground, snowshoeing can also be an invigorating way to experience a winter wonderland!
Snowmobiling is another way to get the adrenaline pumping while getting lost in the backcountry, and Central Montana offers world class snowmobiling opportunities. While there are several locations to choose from, we are particularly known for Kings Hill Recreation Area in the Little Belt Mountains. Southeast of Great Falls, Kings Hill has more than 200 miles of marked snowmobile trails!
Given the colder temperatures that come with winter in Central Montana, ice skating can be a fantastic way to have a fun winter afternoon, especially if you may be visiting relatives for the holidays.
For the fish and wildlife outdoorsman, ice fishing can be a great way to get out of the house and test your luck with a fishing rod. Many of our small towns offer fishing access close by that delivers some of the best ice fishing experiences you can find.
In short, winter in Central Montana does have some frosty temperatures that ebb and flow throughout the season. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get out in The Heart of The Big Sky and enjoy its wintertime season that has a true beauty of its own.
