About Lewistown Trail System
If you're looking to experience Lewistown on foot, bike, or even on horseback, the newly created trail system is by far the best and most scenic choice. We are very proud of these meandering trails, winding in and out of the historic downtown district, through the old neighborhoods and off towards the country, following beautiful creeks, farm and ranch lands, and distinctive habitats. Nearly 20 miles of trails available to the public - linking our business center, schools, parks, ponds and landmarks.
You might want to start behind the Yogo Inn, where the trail system crosses Main Street, and start walking or riding to the south. You'll parallel the Spring Creek flood control channel and then come around in back of Frank Day Park. From there continue south and you'll cross Ash Street and enter the Brewery Flats Recreation Area. This is a beautiful natural area where the trail follows the meanders of Big Spring Creek. Wildlife are abundant and you can check the surface of the Creek to see if the trout are snacking on insects.
Heading back towards town, you can bear left as you approach Frank Day Park and continuing to the northwest you'll be able to explore the trails that circle the Frog Ponds. Many a small fisherman has had an experience that will be remembered for a lifetime tying into one of the larger trout stocked in the ponds. If you continue past the Frog Ponds, you can access the trail along Airport Road and you may be able to see the bison family that lives behind the Charles M. Russell Wildlife Refuge Headquarters Building. You can also stop at the Headquarters Building and get information on the Refuge and see the progress on the interpretive nature trail they are building around the perimeter of their site.
If you are interested in distance, you may want to head back to where the main trail crosses Main Street by the Junior High and continue to the northwest along the truck bypass all the way to where the trail intersects Hwy 87 west of town. There will be a link back to town along the highway in the next couple of years, but for now it will be best to just do an out and back once you hit the highway.
