Aged to Imperfection - A Montana Take on Wabi Sabi

Wednesday, 12/11/2019

Aged to Imperfection: A Montana Take on Wabi Sabi features 18 unassuming artifacts from The History Museum’s Permanent Collection. The History Museum Executive Director, Kristi Scott, believes this new exhibition is creating history, “examining Montana’s cultural heritage through these artifacts is really fascinating as the wabi-sabi viewpoint urges us to take a step back and appreciate the humble and imperfect in our everyday lives.”

The exhibition examines artifacts in the Museum’s collection that illustrate the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi. Wabi-sabi is an appreciation of the imperfect, incomplete, and impermanent; a recognition of the beauty of everyday objects that are often modest, humble and handmade. Aged to Imperfection: A Montana Take on Wabi Sabi is curated by Judy Ellinghausen, archivist for The History Museum for 15 years and a member of the Collections Department team since 2017. The exhibit reminds patrons that though the modern way of living embodies polished, mass-produced, technologically saturated artifacts, both nature and basic human needs remain constant.

This History Museum invites our community to attend the opening of this exhibition which is free and open to the public. The evening includes refreshments, light appetizers, and a brief talk on the subject.
