Harlowton Montana

Elevation: 4,185 Population: 1,031 County: Wheatland

Harlowton sits on the banks of the Musselshell River, just east of the Crazy and Castle Mountains and south of the Little Belts and Snowies. "Harlo" has gained fame in recent years for the Judith Gap Wind Energy Center north of the town. This ninety tower wind farm just off US Highway 191 is often among the biggest energy producers in the state. It also spurred the creation of the annual Montana Festival of the Wind, a day filled with wind related activities and celebrations. Harlowton has a long history of electric energy. Before the Milwaukee Railroad stopped running the town served as the eastern terminus for the longest stretch of electric railway in North America. In the center of town you can view the E-57B electric train engine. The recently restored Milwaukee Depot showcases history of the electric line and Milwaukee railroad. The Upper Musselshell Museum complex, part of Montana's Dinosaur Trail, occupies two historic two-story buildings and is filled with rotating displays of the Upper Musselshell's history and paleontology.
