Chester Montana

Sixty miles and the towering Sweetgrass Hills separate Chester, Montana from Alberta, Canada. At seven thousand feet the Hills are really mountains, the tallest isolated peaks in the United States. With the Sweetgrass Hills as a backdrop, the land around Chester spreads out in rolling plains and coulees, landscapes featured in many paintings by cowboy artist Charlie Russell. Today, as in Russell's day, opportunities for outdoor adventures abound in Chester. Lake Elwell behind Tiber Dam features year 'round opportunities to fish in the lake's twenty square miles. Boating, swimming, water skiing, camping and birdwatching opportunities are available in spring, summer and fall. The land around Chester is also prime hunting country for deer, antelope and upland game birds.

Grammy-nominee pianist Philip Aaberg returned home to Chester and has his recording studio in a grain bin shaped building in town. The Liberty Village Arts Center and Gallery features rotating local, state and national art shows and workshops. The Liberty County Museum showcases authentic displays of the Homestead Era and records the history of the region's homestead boom.
