Neihart Montana

Elevation: 5,704 Population: 35 County: Cascade

Located in the heart of the Little Belt Mountains and the Lewis and Clark National Forest, Neihart came into existence as a mining town. In fact, miners took some three million dollars worth of sapphires from the mountains around Neihart. Like many mining towns Neihart has endured several boom-and-bust cycles, and ghost town structures and the remnants of mines dot the surrounding mountainsides and the fringes of town. Neihart sits along the beautiful King's Hill Scenic Byway in the Lewis and Clark Forest and recreational opportunities abound. Ten miles north of town is the Sluice Boxes State Park, an eight mile long stretch of Belt Creek dominated by towering cliffs and canyon walls. On the way, be sure to stop and take a walk on the handicap accessible trail at Memorial Falls. Showdown Ski Area is Montana's oldest ski area and offers fourteen hundred vertical feet of skiing for all levels. The Silver Crest Trails Association maintains groomed cross country ski and snowmobile trails in the Little Belts. During the summer, the Little Belts offer miles of trails for hiking and biking and fantastic opportunities to view wildlife. Neihart also has lodging and dining options open year round.
