A Family Reunion Haywagon Adventure

Summer is here, family is coming for a visit and what can you do? Here’s a great idea! I recently joined with friends when they planned a haywagon ride as part of their family reunion in north central Montana. Their gathering was headquartered in Chinook, MT located on US Hwy 2…we call it Montana’s Hi-Line. After touring the Blaine County Museum in Chinook we traveled about 15 miles south on Clear Creek Road. Kudos to … Read more

Hitch Those Wagons for A Montana Adventure

A few weeks ago I joined Halfmoon Enterprises southeast of Lewistown, MT on one of their wagon train adventures and what an adventure it was! Since I don’t have a wagon (my Subaru doesn’t count) I decided to ride along in one of the wagons. My other option was renting one of their horses and going along as an outrider. The wagon seat won out! Three of us drove east of Harlowton, MT to the … Read more

Still Birdwatching – Our List is Growing

Here’s the drill, it’s 6am, we are packed and checked out, breakfast is either consumed or in hand, and we are driving south of Havre, MT 10 miles to Beaver Creek Park. This 17 mile long park straddles the paved road giving easy access to several camping areas, fishing gems, and great places for birding. Although I was tired and probably not ready to start, the first group of birds did get my attention. Think … Read more

Two More Days of Birdwatching

I’ll admit, when we checked out of the Fairfield Park Inn in Fairfield, MT at 6am for our second day of birding, I was tired. Surely, the same birds would still be there at 8am! It didn’t take long for my enthusiasm to come back when we traveled west of Choteau, MT along Bellview Road and saw McCown’s longspur, Cassin’s finch, prairie falcons, kestrals, bluebirds, sharp-tailed grouse and sandhill cranes. I knew about bluebird boxes … Read more

Take A Stroll on the River’s Edge Trail

River’s Edge Trail winds its way along the Missouri River as it travels through Great Falls, Montana. This non-motorized use trail is on both north and south sides of the river and bypasses Black Eagle Falls, Rainbow Falls and Crooked Falls.  The trail is paved for approximately 12 miles but as you reach the edges of the city, it becomes gravel for single track use. City parks, historic districts, interpretive panels and ADA access from parking areas combine to make this trail one … Read more

A Birdwatching Trip through Russell Country

We’ve been doing some exploring following trails in Russell Country’s birding brochure titled “Wings Across the Big Sky”. Follow along as we share our knowledge gained! Our first stop in this birdwatching trek was at Great Falls’ Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center located on the banks of the Missouri River. Here we learned about birds discovered by the expedition over 200 years ago. We walked out the north door of the Center towards the river to a paved, nonmotorized trail and began … Read more
