Square Butte Wilderness Study Area
Square Butte has been designated a Wilderness Study Area. The flat topped butte juts 2,400 feet above the surrounding plains. With its soaring buttresses, spires, and pinnacles it is a compelling and imposing site. Scenic Square Butte has exceptional wildlife values with a herd of mountain goats that can be seen consistently on top. The butte's steep cliffs provide outstanding nesting habitat for raptors.

Services And Amenities
Take Montana Highway 80 to the town of Square Butte, then drive west on a county road for 2.5 miles, following the signs to Square Butte Natural Area. Access to the butte is through the headquarters of a private ranch. Private landowner must be contacted to receive permission to cross their land to access the BLM land. Park at the base of the butte and then hike about 1 mile to reach the top.
