Can We Talk About Pie?

Central Montana is working on developing a Pie Trail throughout the region. Yesterday was my first day of sampling – a very fun requirement! I was driving on MT Highway 200 near Winnett and stopped in to the Kozy Korner cafe. I sat below the sign that said they were voted best pie in the state of Montana by The Tin Cup Sportsmen from Green Bay, Wisconsin. That’s enough to get anyone excited for a … Read more

December Brunch at the Union Grille

Every Sunday in December the Grand Union Hotel in Fort Benton does a plated and served brunch in the Union Grille restaurant. I’ve been wanting to get there since the first Sunday – I finally got there! The lobby of the Grand Union was decorated beautifully with just enough decorations to enhance the rich woodwork and warm colors. I could hear live music coming from the dining room and soon found out it was Rich Matoon strumming his … Read more

Beautiful Renovation at Celtic Cowboy

When I first heard talk about renovation of the Arvon Block I didn’t even know where it was. Well, time for my education, it’s in downtown Great Falls on a street I drive every day on my way to the post office. I began to see lots of construction trucks parked at the site and was eager to see the finished product. An anticipated opening was delayed a bit by slow delivery of supplies but … Read more

Geraldine’s Home Cafe is A Blue Ribbon Winner

On my visit to Geraldine, Montana last week I stopped in to the brand new Home Cafe. After a fire on Main Street destroyed Geraldine’s grocery store a year ago, the Ludeman family built a new building that now houses Ludeman’s Country Market, The Home Cafe and Bar 34. I happened to notice a jelly jar of chokecherry jelly on the counter of the Home Cafe – my weakness! It didn’t take long for the story to be told. … Read more

I Do Love Coffee Shops

After a morning of birdwatching at Freezout Lake between Fairfield and Choteau, Montana I drove to Choteau and stopped at The Meeting Grounds cafe. It was chilly, heck, it was downright cold because I hadn’t dressed right! A hot beverage was just what I needed. I’m not a coffee snob but I like to think I’m a coffee purist! I don’t like anything mixed in my coffee – just fresh roasted, fresh ground coffee brewed … Read more

Relaxing Morning at the Rising Trout Cafe

When I was in Lewistown, Montana a couple of weeks ago I wandered up Main Street and found another great coffee shop to add to my list of favorites. As you enter The Rising Trout Cafe you experience a colorful atmosphere – deep red colored walls, paintings and beautiful photographs decorate the cafe and bookshelves offer some good reading while you sip your java. To top it off, a comfy leather couch and chair are waiting for anyone who wants to … Read more

Breakfast Worth Driving For

Last week I was lucky to have breakfast at Eddie’s Corner, literally a corner at the junction of US Hwy 191 and 87. We had stayed in Lewistown and planned to do some touring in the area. Eddie’s Corner was a perfect stop, just about 15 or 20 minutes from Lewistown. Eddie’s Corner has been there over 50 years. It really began as a truck stop and today it offers fuel, showers for truckers, overnight … Read more

Great Coffee Shop in Harlowton

I do admire a good cup o’ joe and when I find a place that does their own roasting, grinds their beans fresh and, as a result turns out awesome coffee – well, I love it! And, I happen to believe that people on vacation in Montana have to like that too! Snowy Mountain Coffee and Slow Rise Bakery in Harlowton (right on the corner of Central Ave across from the E-57B train engine) fits … Read more

Unique Shopping at Big Sky Grocery

I was traveling back to Great Falls yesterday from Harlowton and decided to make a quick (or so I thought) stop at Big Sky Grocery. The grocery store sits in a field about a half mile or so west of Eddie’s Corner (junction of US 191 and 200/MT 3). There are a couple of wooden gazebo structures outside in the gravel parking lot and a large sign giving hours of operation for the grocery store. I … Read more

Puckering Up at the Chokecherry Fest

Lewistown hosts the annual Montana Chokecherry Festival the first Saturday after Labor Day each year. The festival celebrates the chokecherry – a tart wild berry that grows profusely in Central Montana. It may be a tart berry but oh, it makes some mighty delicious treats. Lots of people bake with it and my Mom used to can the juice and then it could be made in to jelly or syrup. A culinary competition is held the … Read more
