An Artsy Weekend in Great Falls, Montana

The Western Art Capital of the World – that’s what folks call Great Falls this time of year. It all began with one art show and auction – the C. M. Russell Art Auction, named after western artist Charlie Russell. There are now art shows and auctions throughout the city – the Great Falls Native American Art Show, Western Heritage Artists Show and Sale, Jay Contway and Friends Art Show, March In Montana Show and Auction, the original C. M. Russell Art Auction and now a sale called The Russell.

The auctions and quick draw/quick finish shows are really high energy. You can definitely feel the pulse as auction prices rise and the bidding keeps on going. In several quick draw/quick finish events, artists have a limited amount of time to finish their work while attendees are watching them. Talk about pressure! After the bell rings the artists show their finished product and then the bidding begins.

Several shows take place in hotels and you can visit individual artist rooms for free. Other shows are at Montana Expo Park and the Civic Center with art set up throughout. The Great Falls Historic Trolley runs between nine different locations so there is no need to drive to all of them.

Entertainment is featured at several shows – Native American dancers, musicians and speakers. Art prices vary and surely you’ll find something to match your budget. Don’t miss this exciting weekend in Great Falls March 17-21.
