Fort Benton’s Grand Union Hotel

Yesterday I was at a noon meeting in Fort Benton at the beautifully restored Grand Union Hotel. Fort Benton, snuggled on the Missouri River banks just off US Hwy 87, is about 36 miles from Great Falls. We had a pretty steady drizzle of rain the entire way and I was lamenting (OK, complaining) that I wouldn’t get any scenic photos from the overlook just before the turn to Fort Benton. Ironically, as we drove by … Read more

April Showers Bring White Stuff

Yes, white fluffy snow blanketed central Montana early today. The Great Falls area received about 12 inches of spring snow. This photo was taken out my front door about 8am today. Moisture was spotty around the region though. Russell Country’s HiLine communities along US Hwy 2 reported no snow. Last weekend I was doing some spring yard cleanup and I almost put my snow shovel away. I decided not to because it seems like when I do … Read more

Havre’s AmericInn Supporting the Troops

Ruby Christian, who manages Havre’s AmericInn, told me about a great project of their hotel franchise. They recently gathered in Las Vegas and assembled packages for over 300 American troops serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and other bases around the world. It seems like I drive by the AmericInn in Havre a lot but I’ve only stayed there once. They have concrete block construction and if you’ve ever had a not too quiet hotel or motel room, this is a big … Read more

New Comfort Inn & Suites in Great Falls

There has been some hotel transition in Great Falls the last few months – a little bit of name change, a whole lot of renovating! The former Holiday Inn Express is now the Comfort Inn & Suites. They are located adjacent to Great Falls’ Marketplace Shopping Center, just off Exit 0 from Tenth Avenue South. It’s always interesting to tour our lodging facilities and see the great upgrades they are doing. The Comfort Inn & … Read more

Ice Breaker Road Race

I could probably say that I’m one of the hearty runners in this photo taken last Sunday at Great Falls’ annual Ice Breaker Road Race. Full disclosure…I did not run in the Ice Breaker and, I didn’t even walk it! I’m not much of a runner but I thoroughly enjoy walking so that would have been the category for me if I had entered. The weather was definitely in theme with the race name (Ice … Read more

Can’t Forget Russell’s Log Studio

After our wooden “horse ride” at the Children’s Discovery Room in the C. M. Russell Museum, we decided to visit the log studio. I always feel the studio is a true glimpse of Russell as an artist, moreso than his home which is also located on the one-block museum complex. We walked through the gift shop at the museum on our way to the studio and there were some very tempting items, a lot of things I had never … Read more

Charlie Russell Through the Eyes of a Child

This past Sunday was the Great Falls Museum Consortium’s “Sunday Sampler” with free admission to ten different museums and interpretive centers. A Treasure Hunt map was available for those who would attempt to visit all attractions that afternoon. It was a beautiful day, coming on the heels of some midweek snow, and we were ready to be out and about. As we entered the Russell Museum in Great Falls’ lower northside neighborhood it seemed quiet. Sunday Sampler … Read more

Galerie Trinitas Open House

This is the eleventh time local museums and interpretive centers in Great Falls have organized a “Sunday Sampler” for the public. Admission fees to participating attractions are waived and activities are coordinated with emphasis on children. The goal is to make locals more aware of what the community has to offer. One of the museums I visited today was Galerie Trinitas located right next to Trinitas Chapel on the University of Great Falls campus. For those … Read more

Good Fresh Food at Penny’s Gourmet

Today I had a noon meeting at Penny’s Gourmet to Go in downtown Great Falls, MT. I’ve managed to get in a bit of a habit when I go to Penny’s because I always, yes always, have one of her homemade soups. And, to continue the “always” haves, I have her homemade bread. It is simply my favorite fresh baked bread! Penny’s restaurant was started as more of a deli featuring “to go” foods with just a … Read more
